Feasts

This week, Kotzebue hosted several young (think 20-40!) people into town for the Institute of the North's Leadership Conference.

I attended with great pleasure and an open mind. I have my own ideas about the issues we face in the rural areas, because I live here, but wanted to see if they are similar to those who live in urban Alaska.

*Dried Siilik (Northern Pike), Dried Whitefish, Smoked Salmon, White Muktuk (Beluga), Black Muktuk (Bowhead), and Caribou Paniqtaq (dried).

Among all the exercises, we ate...a lot. And played...a lot. I found (maybe I didn't find, he found me!) an old friend from my summer college days. (OLD!) And made lots of new friends. (Thank you Facebook!)

*Herring Eggs on Hemlock from Sitka.

*Dried raw Bearded Seal Meat (Ugruk)

Since I am super busy and don't like to air "issues" persay on this blog, I'll just entice you with the wonderful feast for our bellies we enjoyed on Sunday afternoon. I'm happy that everyone seemed to have a grand time visiting here, experiencing the high cost of fuel, milk, and electricity if only for a few days. Quite possibly this visit could be the catalyst for change in the rural areas facing this enormous cost of living. But, save that for another day. I'm just happy people came and liked it here! Cause I do.

*Aqpiks (Cloud or Salmon Berries)

*Blackberries. (That's what we call them, they're maybe Crowberries?)

It's so great to meet up with old and new. (Yes, you're old!) Thanks for coming. Come again soon. (But not in the wintertime when its pitch dark out and 40 below!)

*Condiments. Yum.
